How to Find a Snapchat Profile When You Only Know the Username
By the View Snapchat Stories team · · 1 min read
Snapchat identifies every account by its username, not by the name you see on screen. Display names can be anything and change any time, so “Sarah” matches thousands of people. The username is unique, which is why every Snapchat tool, including ours, asks for it.
Username vs display name
| Display name | Username | |
|---|---|---|
| Example | King Kylie 👑 | kyliejenner |
| Unique? | No | Yes |
| Can change? | Any time | Once a year |
| Allowed characters | Almost anything, emoji too | Letters, numbers, one of . - _ |
Five places to find a username
- Profile links.
snapchat.com/add/username: the last part is the username. These links are common in Instagram, TikTok and YouTube bios. - Snapcodes. The yellow square with dots. Scanning it in the app opens the profile; the username is printed on many shared Snapcodes.
- The profile itself. In the app, the username is the smaller text under the display name.
- Other social accounts. Creators often use the same handle everywhere. Try their Instagram or TikTok handle.
- Story mentions. When someone tags an account in a public story, tapping the tag shows the username.
Check that a username exists
Type it into our Snapchat Username Finder. If a public profile exists, you’ll see the display name, photo and subscriber count, with a link to the stories. “Not found” has three possible meanings:
- the username is spelled differently (try with and without dots or underscores),
- the account exists but has no public profile, or
- the account was renamed or deleted.
Common spelling patterns
If you’re guessing, people often use: firstname.lastname, firstname_lastname, firstnamelastname, a name plus birth year, or the same handle as their Instagram. Usernames are not case-sensitive, so capitals don’t matter.
